Day One of Standardbred Canada's yearling sale is complete and to say overall it was a disaster is an understatement. What people feared as a result of the provincial government's decision to end the Slots at Racetracks program has come true. In 2011, the average Day One price for 142 yearlings was $16,176. One year later, the average price for yearlings on Day One was $8,176 for the 124 yearlings that passed thru, meaning prices on Day One declined 49.5%.
While the books can't be closed until day two is complete, the results from day one can't be construed as anything but awful. In 2011, the average price paid for a yearling when considering both days of the sale was $14,621 when 302 horses passed the gavel.
