The Cane Pace is moving to Tioga Downs for 2011 and 2012 since Freehold Raceway is suffering from a severe purse account problem as a result of the NJSEA not transferring money from the last purse enhancement payment made from Atlantic City. The hope of Freehold is the race can return to Freehold in 2013.
Don't bet on its return to Freehold. It will take a racino at the Meadowlands for Freehold to afford the Cane Pace; that assumes Freehold Raceway will still be in existence by 2013. Unfortunately, their survival is not guaranteed. There has to be a question of how long Greenwood Racing and Penn National Gaming is willing to keep investing in Freehold. Unless the scenario for alternative gaming changes, it is a matter of time before they cut their losses. Perhaps it will be after this fall's legislative elections when there will be a new election for legislative leadership posts to see if a pro-casino leadership takes control of the legislature; it may be after the next gubernatorial election. One thing for sure, the moment it becomes sure there will not be a racino at the Meadowlands, Freehold's days are likely numbered.
