For the very first time, I went to OD (6.30.11); clearly, it is different from the other venues I visit (Har, DD, Chst, PcD) but in its own way, it holds its own.

The clubhouse was filled and trackside was crowded. From what I can tell, most marketing is via word of mouth; any billboard at the OC boardwalk claiming free parking, entertainment, etc. would fill the place. As it was, service at the clubhouse was slow in major part due to the attendance.

I have read elsewhere that the lack of a grandstand is taken as a negative--this is not my impression. Now, my impression is from one visit alone (so take it for what it's worth) but what is at OD makes for a party atmosphere; I did not miss the lack of a grandstand at all.

The place looked filled and not vacant.

Of particular note was the composition of the crowd. The crowd was much, much younger than what I normally see and in the clubhouse were quite a few making their first visit (we sat next to a table of golden girls making their first trip to the racetrack. They had a ball).

It was very much a party crowd.

Jim,

This is good to know. Problem I understand, is there no bathrooms on the grandstand apron so you need ot use port-o-johns. In addition, if it rains, no one can stay outside.

From what I saw, you are exactly correct.

Port-o-johns are in plain view at the beginning of the stretch and there is absolutely no place to escape from inclimate weather (aside from going into the casino or clubhouse).
