Back then (1960's and 1970's), Green Mountain in VT, Narragansett and Lincoln Downs in RI, and a slew of Massachusetts fairs (Great Barrington, Northampton, Weymouth, and Berkshire Downs) featured $ 1500 thoroughbred claimers and up. I recall several Summer nights at Scarborough before the grandstand was enclosed when the mosquitoes were very much present and left their mark. Narragansett did not use tractors to pull away the starting gate when the thoroughbreds raced two-turn races. They used a team of draft horses to pull the gate into the infield. Also, Lincoln hosted a harness meet for one year on their 13/16 mile track.JLBnoreply@blogger.com
